Live and Let Die
At three oâclock a.m. Johnny woke from a disturbing dream. His breath was coming in quick pants, as it often did after one of these night terrors, but that particular night he couldâve sworn that his heart was beating faster than it ever had before. Johnny checked the clock out of habit, but he knew what he would see burning on its digital face. The nightmares happened like clockwork each night, and that time was no exception.
What was different was the nature of the dreams. They were always of a frightening nature, but that night the images he saw in that otherworldly place were inextricably gruesome. He had seen his friend Heath die, murdered in a cruel and remorseless manner. Johnny closed his eyes and shook himself, trying in vain to wipe the images from his memory with little more than the physical reaction of a child who has just seen a fleeting shadow and thought it a monster. When that didnât work, Johnny decided to try a different approach. He grabbed his phone off the bedside table and texted Heath, asking if he was okay. He didnât expect an immediate response; like himself, Heath was likely asleep in bed at home. Unless he was still out partying, and if that was the case then there was no way to know how long he might be out. A few minutes later, Johnny was fast asleep again, one hand clutching his phone as though he was expecting a call from an important local senator.
When he awoke again, he had forgotten any remnant of his nightmare, or his compulsion to check on his friend. He simply sat up groggily, wiped the sleep from his eyes, and started his day. Iron Coffin had a rehearsal scheduled for late that afternoon, as they often did the day after a show, and Johnny intended to get some practice time in before that.
In the living room, he plugged Megan into his practice amp, but before playing anything he noticed something strange. There was some sort of red liquid on her high âEâ string. He dabbed at it with one finger, and examined it under the overhead light. It was a deep crimson, and thicker than water.
Is this blood? He wondered, but upon checking his own fingertips, he saw no cuts or busted calluses. That meant he hadnât bled during the show last night, so where was this substance from? Johnny had a sickening feeling in his gut, but he couldnât quite place why, so he ignored it. He was probably just hungry. Doesnât everyone get suspicious when theyâre hungry?
Johnny used the sleeve of his shirt to wipe the liquid off of his guitar, then set about his practice session. As usual, playing Megan made him feel alive and excited. It was almost a sexual experience, but it was also even more invigorating than sex. It was a
